Interesting post from Thoughtfix over on tabletblog.com (did we expect anything less?)

Having been inspired by the release of Origami Experience 2.0 for Vista this week, Thoughtfix has turned his attention to the Maemo homescreen and the applets that reside there. He reckons there is a missed opportunity from developers to create a constantly updating screen (like Origami, and the RSS feeder on Maemo for example) that can be used for quick reference.

It seems some people are already using the N8×0 tablets in this way however, as there are plenty of commenters listing the home screen applets they use on a day to day basis to keep up to date with the world.

Get your IT and laptop tethered to the N95 8GB

Over on his blog The Racing Geek himself has taken time out to put together an indepth guide to tethering the N95 8GB to both a Mac laptop (under OSX Tiger) and an N800 running OS 2008.

Now that the N95 8GB (or the NAM variant at least) can take advantage of 3G access speeds in the states, you may find it is something you want to use for data on the move. Both guides have a nice step-by-step structure to keep you on the right track, and there is also a quick troubleshooting section at the end should you run into any problems.

Internet Tablet musing in the iPhone 3G aftermath

Writing over on tabletblog.com, Thoughtfix has covered a couple of points that have come to him out of the mist of the iPhone 3G release.

In a couple of posts surrounding the same issue, thoughtfix compares the iPhone to the N810 and lists his reasons why he thinks the N810 will win out on a number of counts. The comments are mixed on this, but an interesting idea does come from MDK which leads thougthfix to write a follow-up post…

This article concerns whether independent developers on maemo will ever be able to monetize their apps as the iPhone crowd will soon be able to do. Again, there’s a mixed response with one view being that a more consumer friendly approach to software on the N8×0 tablets could be a real boon for sales of teh device.

Internet Tablets, huh, what are they good for?

The boards at Internet Tablet Talk are buzzing with an age old question - what are the N8×0 internet tablets for?

It’s all kicked off with an uber post from ddalex, who started with an N770 back in the day, but is disappointed that the Internet tablet format hasn’t matured into something more powerful. Cue discussion on whether the tablets need to do anything more than browse, whether consumers have unrealistic expectations given available technology, what the alternatives are and dreams for the future. A nice thread for anyone not entirely sure if they want or need an IT and for you long time users to get stuck in.

N800 hits the sweet spot

Over on his blog, Torley has posted some thoughts on the N800 he has recently purchased, and they make for some entertaining reading.

Looking for something to ‘capture ideas’ on, as well as ‘poke’ the internet, Torley came across the N800 as the possible answer to his search. He loves the kickstand, the stylus, the easy to install apps and the open platform, as well as the ‘superb’ list of pre-installed internet radio stations and the ‘brilliantly bright and razor-crisp’ screen. The design is, according to him, ‘intensely compact and amazing’ and whilst he does have a few small niggles (camera quality, battery life and poor handwriting recognition), his overall impression is a good one. Indeed it is living up to Torley’s expectations ‘and beyond’, and let’s face it, you couldn’t ask for much more.

Nokia BH-703 headset reviewed

While devices may in themselves be great things, they can be improved even further with the addition of the odd enhancement or two…

Gerrymoth, he of Nokia Addict, has shown just what a bluetooth headset can bring to the party by
reviewing the Nokia BH-703 headset, a ‘cool’ looking in-the-ear headset that offers USB charging - a great addition in Gerrymoth’s eyes. Despite these plus points however, the headset just wouldn’t stay in his ear very easily, which is obviously frustrating for such a product and was the one thing that stopped enjoyment from what else was on offer.

Built in IM client – makes messaging a dream

jamespowell1989 from Talk About Nseries has brought a handy hint to the space, for those of us who haven’t discovered the built-in IM client on our devices.

He introduces the Mobjab application that will connect your device to any IM gateway that you choose. With a handy step-by-step guide, James walks us through the process, with screenshots at each stage. He reckons once you’re signed up, then the ‘simple and easy to use interface’, coupled with the ‘huge area’ available to view conversations makes for a very pleasant experience. James says that the functionality (such as being able to change the alert tone when you receive a message) makes this app ‘streets ahead’ of any of its rivals.

Nokia S60 BH-503 headphones review

Over on The Symbian Blog, Vaibhav Sharma has been testing out the power of the BH-503 headphones.

He starts out by saying that the headphones allow the user to listen to music wirelessly ‘in great stereo quality’. Vaibhav reckons his previously held opinion that Bluetooth isn’t capable of streaming music has been blown ‘completely out of the water’ by these headphones. The ‘crisp and deep’ sound that they produce, coupled with the design means that ‘however hard you rock your head’, these babies aren’t going to come loose. And the signal is strong and constant too, with no ‘cracking or stuttering’, even through a wall! Vaibhav reckons these are a ‘good buy’ and recommends pairing them with an Eseries to make a ‘great combination’.

N800 and N810 – connecting an HDD via USB

In another of her invaluable video tutorials, neoncherry from Internet Tablet School shows us how to attach an external hard drive to an NIT using a USB cable.

In the accompanying words, she explains the whys and the hows. Why you would want to connect an external hard drive? – the storage capacity is ‘so huge’, they are portable and it can be used as a place to park your multimedia files so they can be retrieved without having to boot up a computer. To install, all you need is a female-to-female USB, and an app that can be downloaded in seconds. With her usual troubleshooting hints and tips, neoncherry once again shows anyone out there who is a bit unsure of the technology that it really isn’t that tough.

Nseries combo makes long journeys seem short

Al Pavangkanan has been visiting his folks, and tell us on The Nokia Blog how he survived the road trip by using a cunning mix of Nokia devices.

By preloading podcasts to his N82 the previous evening, Al had something to occupy him during a two and a half hour bus ride to Louisiana, and when not listening, he was able to take some geotagged snaps of interesting things he saw along the way. Once the N82’s battery had run out, he plugged in a Proporta portable charger and switched to an N800 to watch some movies. On the return trip, listening to a podcast on an N95, whilst browsing the internet on his newly invigorated N82 passed the time well. Using his Proporta he was able to keep his half-charged N95 going for the duration, and still was able to recharge the N82 on his return before the handy gizmo ran out of juice.

All roads on Nokia Maps lead to Rome

Martin Sauter, from Wireless Moves, has been treading in the footsteps of the great Stavros, and has been touring Rome using his Nokia.

By making use of Nokia Maps and downloading three City Guides for the app from various locations, Martin had the city at his fingertips, and hooking up the info from these to Wikipedia via OperaMini, he was able to gain all the information he required. He used the guide (he plumped for WCities in the end) to conduct a ‘hidden gems’ tour, and found that there were a couple of things he would like to see improved in later updates. Generally though, pairing Nokia Maps with such a guide, and making use of the browsing capabilities of his device made the trip to Rome a breeze.

Garnet VM for Nokia tablets gets updated

Ryan Kairer writing on Palm Info Center has reported on Access’s release of a new update to Palm OS Garnet VM for Nokia tablets, emulation software that allows all you N800 and N810 users to run Palm OS apps on your tablet.

Main updates in this release include full screen support as well as compatibility and performance updates. Ryan provides a good rundown of Garnet VM which gives a good introduction to the product, while hkklife’s comment focuses on whether there is support for the idea of including Palm’s range of PIM apps on the N800/N810 to counter the Nokia device’s lack of such software.

Interestingly, she has found the 770Flasher available for Mac, which although labeled 770, will actually allow you to update your N800 and N810 via your Mac quickly and easily. Sports Tracker update – video now supported

The space is awash today with news of the latest update to Sports Tracker, bringing it up to v1.76.

Vaibhav Sharma from The Symbian Blog comments that now as well as pictures, users can upload video clips from their work outs. In addition, the N78 and N96 handsets are now supported. Vaibhav uses the Royal We to claim that the blogosphere is in ‘unanimous’ concord that the name Sports Tracker is in need of an upgrade. Name suggestions range from Traveler, Voyager to Nokia Paths, and Vaibhav has thrown the debate open to further comments.

Meanwhile over at All About Symbian, Steve Litchfield also brings news of the upgrade and wonders whether the video upload will work with the widget. He is also in agreement that the current name is ‘restrictive’.

Nokia Nseries – good, but could do better

Over at Mobile Space, Amir has posted some thoughts on what he would add to an upcoming Nseries device in an ideal world.

To make a ‘perfect’ handset, Amir would include a ‘sliding QWERTY keyboard’, maybe in an N82-type form factor. He would also like to see a better solution to editing and proof reading documents, such as a better, free version of a Quick Office licence. This would be especially handy if the QWERTY keyboard were attached. Another handy addition would be enhanced audio recording. Amir sums up by saying that the range of N and Eseries caters well for existing customers, but if Nokia want to extend their market share they should produce more ‘feature-rich’ devices.

S60 eReader beta news

Rafe from All About Symbian has posted about a new (ish) e-book reader for S60 devices.

The S60 version of eReader (beta) will be ‘most attractive’ to people who have already bought ebooks using eReader for their PC. Rafe also introduces Mobipocket, another ebook platform, as an alternative which has both a software reader and an ebook store (it’s backed by Amazon). Both have the same features – such as full screen mode and the ability to look up certain words – so making the choice will be based on purely personal feeling.

The blogosphere is disappointed with the news that was confirmed this week by N-Gage.

Tzer2 at All About N-Gage has written that when a user upgrades their handset, the only way to keep the N-Gage games they have purchased is to ‘buy them all over again’. He lists 10 reasons why he thinks N-Gage have made an error, including punishing both N-Gage and Nokia fans which will erode loyalty, and encouraging piracy with disgruntled users finding a way to port the games to a new device. Matt Miller, The Mobile Gadgeteer, expands on Tzer2’s news by letting us know that the games will be ‘locked to a single device IMEI’.

Devin Balentina from The Nokia Guide weighs in with his opinion, as he thought purchased games ‘would somehow be linked to [his] N-Gage account’. He personally won’t be making a ‘single purchase’ until there has been a statement from N-Gage clarifying the situation for users.

With ‘nine out of the ten’ apps being free, Mark says S60 devices are a lot like computers in that they allow the user to download items to aid the experience. Some of the apps are as one might expect – a web search tool (Google Search) that allows him to simply press one key to fire up the search box. Also in the list are Sports Tracker, Nokia Maps and Share Online, allowing Mark to find where to go, track his progress and post any pictures he takes along the way. One app that you might not expect, but in Mark’s opinion certainly improves on the bundled solution, is Calcium, a calculator tool that Mark covered in a vlog not so long ago. For a different perspective, check out Zach’s article on Symbian In Motion – he lists the Top 5 apps he can’t live without.

neoncherry from Internet Tablet School has brought us a quick fix for a problem that befalls NIT users and sometimes leaves them flummoxed.

When your web browser’s Flash stops working, what’s a guy (or gal) to do? Most of us shrug and leave it, hoping the problem will be fixed next time we turn the tablet off and on again, but neoncherry has actually provided a fix. By making sure a couple of things are ticked in the Components menu, things should all run smoothly in the NIT browser world.

NIT tutorial – attach a flash drive to your tablet

neoncherry on her Internet Tablet School blog has brought us a video explaining how to connect a flash USB drive to your tablet.

She says that some people prefer to use flash drives rather than memory cards, and their ease of use with desktop PCs means they are more flexible than having to use a card reader. Similar to attaching a USB keyboard, a female to female adapter is needed, and neoncherry gives some helpful hints to safe use (such as having to safely disconnect before removing). With a troubleshooting guide as well as the video, there should be no reason why you aren’t merrily attaching USB drives within minutes.

Similar to attaching a USB keyboard, a female to female adapter is needed, and neoncherry gives some helpful hints to safe use (such as having to safely disconnect before removing). With a troubleshooting guide as well as the video, there should be no reason why you aren’t merrily attaching USB drives within minutes.

Nokia S60 browser can learn from Opera Mini

Mark Guim over at The Nokia Blog has a suggestion for Nokia regarding the S60 browser.

He’s has created a video showing the extra button presses needed on the N95 8GB browser simply to input the .com of a URL. Borrowing from Opera Mini, Mark suggests that an auto complete option should be included. With a clear example, he shows the Opera Mini drop down that appears whenever the ‘dot’ of .com is entered. He also makes passing mention of the .com button on the iPhone. Learnings here for Nokia and hopefully heed will be paid in the next update to the browser.

Guardian keeps your device secure

Over at The Symbian Blog Vaibhav Sharma has been ‘playing’ with the 3rd version of Guardian.

Protecting your device from unauthorised usage, the app even pinpoints your handset using the inbuilt GPS if you leave it in a cab (or it gets stolen by the driver). Easy to set up, Guardian gives you the ability to lock and password protect certain applications (a feature of rivals to Nokia for some time now), and will even give you the number of the new SIM after a loss/theft. It also lets you send a fake SMS to the device (for example from the police) once it has been reactivated. Quite the handful for anyone who gets their hands on your Nokia without your authority.

N810 – a harlot?

Gerrymoth from Nokia Addict brings us two posts about the N810, firstly decrying it for being a temptress, and secondly bemoaning its loss.

He was tempted away from his N800 briefly by the sultry N810, leaving him ‘wracked with guilt’. His N800 had previously been his ‘lounge toy’ for watching TV and staying in touch with friends, and for messaging and Jaiku. A brief dalliance with the N810 threatened this relationship though.

Which brings us to his review. The things he’ll miss most about the N810 are its looks and the slide out keyboard. The keyboard made it ‘easier and faster’ to compose messages, but he was slightly perturbed by the D-pad being on the slide out. ‘Not the best design idea’, although Gerrymoth would learn to live with it.

N8×0 and a normal keyboard

neoncherry from Internet Tablet School has come up with another of her excellent video tutorials, this time detailing how to connect a normal computer keyboard to your N8×0 using the USB cable.

By simply downloading a handy app and purchasing a pocket-money adapter you can use the USB cable of your keyboard and the tablet’s USB socket to hook up, then Bluetooth keyboards at home are not necessary. neoncherry even provides a guide to what to do if you plug in a non-US keyboard, how to safely remove the keyboard and what to do if things don’t quite work out as planned.

Spinvox a lifeline for busy users

Darla Mack has been extolling the virtues of Spinvox over on her site, and explaining how it helps her keep in touch.

What it entails is simply changing the voicemail forwarding number on your device and then all your messages will be delivered via SMS and email. The crafty software converts the spoken word to text, and thus all your missed calls are handily forwarded without the need to call your voicemail every time you think you’ve missed a call. Extremely handy for those Eseries users who are in meetings all day, or the N95 8GB owners who are constantly on the move.

Nokia Software Updater removes Vista support

So it seems Nokia have removed Vista support from the Nokia Software update service, and this has caused a stir in the space.

bery95 from Symbian Web Log reckons it is a reaction to the ‘constant user complaints’ that it was receiving from people struggling with the daily issues NSU and Vista threw up. These problems seem mainly to have come from Microsoft changing the Vista configuration, which has caused a lot more problems than were already occurring.

Teo from Symbian Freak also reports the news, saying that the removal of support is only temporary, and confirms it is the update to Vista that has caused the problem. The reason is for safety, to avoid potential ‘brick’ issues.

UPnP explained

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) has been around a long time, but a couple of posts have sprung up recently that have some hints on how to maximise its use.

Devin Balentina from The Nokia Guide gives us an explanation of UPnP in simple terms. It allows you to ‘copy media files from your PC to your phone or the other way around and display images and video stored on your phone using your PC, all done wirelessly over WiFi’. He references a post by Ewan from All About Symbian who goes into more detail of how to get the most from this feature.

His ‘insanely simple’ step by step guide to setting up UPnP has instructions for transferring music files (but he says the steps are the same for videos and still images). Allowing your device to browse the files on your PC, grabbing your favourite tunes or pics is easy as is getting rid of or replacing them. Ewan concludes by saying that whilst it only shows the first 100 files available, the ‘functionality is there, but it’s lacking a bit of polish’.

Mindmapping on Nokia Internet Tablets

Sometimes the greatest ideas just come to you when you least expect it. And when you least expect it, you are not usually in front of your laptop, white-board or flip chart. What you might have lurking in your bag or pocket however, is your N810 or N800.

Labyrinth is a Mindmapping application for Linux that has been ported to the Maemo platform meaning, of course, you can run it on your N800 or N810 internet tablet and mindmap wherever you can take your tablet. Kevin C. Tofel at jkOnTheRun likes the look of the port though warns that as it is only in alpha it may be a wait until the app is ready for full on, real world use.

Nseries - Happy Birthday!

Vaibhav Sharma over at The Symbian Blog looks back over the 3 years since Nokia first introduced the Nseries into our lives.

Detailing the history, along with a list of devices released, Vaibhav plots the course of the various numbered series as he charts the rise of ‘the Ns’ to today’s all conquering super-devices capable of a rather startling amount! He also details the rise and rise of the Internet Tablet that has culminated in the N810.

Meanwhile, Ninong Brown over at The Nokia Blog has spotted a Nokia device in one of the biggest shows in the US, maybe included as a birthday gift. In a couple of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ clips, he has captured footage of the show - CSI - and the fleeting glimpses of the N95 and N95 8GB.

Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian reckons it’s time to stop tweaking and leave well alone.

Detailing his device history (6 devices in the last 16 months alone), Steve give us the lowdown on the pattern he has followed. Buy shiny new device, play with it until it is working perfectly…see next new shiny device, buy shiny device etc. With comments supporting Steve in his ‘disease’ (the first step is always admitting you have a problem), he advocates fixing your device up the way you want it, then sitting back and enjoying, without falling for the temptations of the shiny new product.

Qik tips and Nokia Maps update

Matthew Stevens over at Darla Macks mobile diva site has put together a great set ofQik tips and a new development for Nokia maps.

He gives us the low down on what Qik is capable of, how to enable your device to take longer videos and how to recover if you crash. There is a whole raft of tips to try while you are streaming like now to make streams public or private and how to send it to Twitter.

Darla also brings news that Nokia Maps will soon come with real time traffic information (or RTTI), which will – according to Nokia – ‘save precious time for drivers’ with the ability to ‘dynamically re-route during navigation’. Currently available for 16 European countries, there is no news of whether this is coming to the US.

An interesting insight into the ‘life in a day’ of a Nokia blogger, normanjohn’s clip starts when he does – getting up in the morning - and focuses on his hard school life. The best part of the daily toil, though, is when he is ‘next to [his] girl’. This captures the whole ethos behind Pangea Day, where you are encouraged to include in your film a person who inspires you or brightens your day. His short film is shot on his N95, and is in with a chance of winning the N95 8GB prize that is up for grabs.

Ovi services get a workout

Over at SMS Text News, Ben Smith has been trying out the various services offered by Nokia.

He tried the music service, but found it ‘clumsy’ and only one of the downloadable free tracks would work for him on his brief train trip. N-Gage (the gaming arm), however, ‘immediately feels like a polished product’ and offers a ‘surprising’ range of games. Ben reckons the ‘responsiveness and video quality is much better’ than he expected, and he thinks he is in danger of ditching work on the train in favour of gaming. The photo sharing capabilities were also given a workout, with Ben describing the upload process as ‘slick’ but ‘click-intensive’. This is part of the Ovi share services, the media sharing site for uploading video, images and the like.

Profile management – what’s the best option?

Amir over at Mobile Space brings us a tutorial of how to get the most out of quite an ignored area of our devices – the profile settings.

He reckons we rely too much on ‘default and tailor-made’ profiles when we could be doing much more with apps such as Handy Profiles and Best Profiles. Both of these apps give you a tabbed sheet of available profiles for easy switching. These can be set to switch automatically according to a rule (for example, if no activity for 15 minutes, switch to Silent). Amir opts for one over the other due to the advanced settings, but to reveal which wouldn’t be fair.

External GPS module for Nokia

Matthew Stevens, writing on Mobile Diva Darla Mack’s site, has shared his thoughts on the external GPS units from Nokia, the LD-3W and LD-4W .

He says that far from being a battery drain (like the in-built GPS in the N95), or failing to get a signal (N810 users, you know what I’m talking about here), the external units might be ‘just what you’re looking for’. Getting up to 11 hours continuous tracking, or a whole week in standby, from a single charge, the LD- 4W can ‘drastically’ improve your GPS experience. From finding a lock in 30 seconds from a cold start to ‘seamlessly’ pairing via Bluetooth, Matthew reckons that an external module should be on everyone’s shopping list.

Definitely A good place to start if you’re looking at getting a dongle for your device that doesn’t have GPS built in already. And if you’re already the owner of one, what are your GPS experiences?
