This bizarre story shows you what happens when architects attack: they try to create Myst-style adventure games in the real world. Thanks to the deep pockets of the owners of a 5th Avenue apartment in Manhattan, a chap named Eric Clough was able devise an apartment-wide puzzle, complete with original ciphers, a clue book, and various obscure puzzle mechanisms. (SOUND FAMILIAR?)
“furniture and some of those walls conceal secrets — messages, games and treasures — that make up a Rube Goldberg maze of systems and contraptions conceived by a young architectural designer named Eric Clough, whose ideas about space and domestic living derive more from Buckminster Fuller than Peter Marino.”
Or perhaps they derive from John Walker’s nightmares about the return of Cryo.

This French Mickey seems to be flaunting the extra digit lacking in his US relative. Link
What I didn't know until recently, is that a stunted version of hypertext had been demonstrated as early as 1968. This was no run-of-the-mill boring-vision-of-the-future demo. This was, simply put, "The Mother of All Demos". Steven Levy first gave it that name and it seems to have stuck: The Mother of All Demos (and oh I really love that name). Douglas Engelbart's whirling vision of the future; it was the first public use of a mouse, as well as examples of cutting, copying, pasting, teleconferencing, video conferencing, email, and... hypertext. It's just too damn much for 1968! From Steven Levy in his book, Insanely Great, The Life and Times of the Macintosh, the Computer That Changed Everything:Link"... a calming voice from Mission Control as the truly final frontier whizzed before their eyes. It was the mother of all demos. Engelbart's support staff was as elaborate as one would find at a modern Grateful Dead concert. ..."

For those of you who who can't seem to get Final Fantasy XII's battle music out of your head, there may soon be something else to hum along to as FFXII composer Hitoshi Sakimoto is looking to bring his musical style to a wider audience, including games produced outside of Japan. Over 20,000 Swarovski crystals were used to make the Wii case pictured above (picture of Bowser on the other side) given to the winner of the Smash Bros Brawl competition -- or you can presumably pay Crystal Icing the retail price of $4,000. First off, kudos to the GDC organizers for putting such different-minded people together for "The Future of Story" panel, which ended up being an insightful and vitriolic debate. The panel, hosted by indie writer Deborah Todd, included Saber 3D's Matthew Karch and Michael Hall (Time Shift), Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack (Too Human), Eidos Montreal's Mary DeMarie (previously: Myst III, IV and Dungeon Siege), Matt Costello (7th Guest) and Director of id Software Tim Willits.Continue reading GDC08: Surviving the war of words in 'The Future of Story' session

There’s a document on my desktop that is entitled “Myst Online Adventures” and it contains a few lines about my first few steps in the famously underwhelming MMO. I was going to go back and do a bit of investigative playtesting for RPS japes, but sadly that document’s completion would be useless for anything other than historical record: Myst Online will close in 59 days time. Sniff.
This forum post has the details.
Many of you have made good friends while playing Myst Online, so here is the bittersweet part. Although Myst Online: Uru Live will be completely shut down in the near future, the game servers will remain live for the next 60 days. During that time, both newcomers and existing players can continue to experience the amazing world of Myst Online, explore the game’s many Ages, and interact with other players in the game and on the MystOnline.com website and forums. After 60 days, the title will be removed from the GameTap service, though MystOnline.com will remain live and active for fans to continue to share their passion for this important game franchise.

We find the Team Fortress 2 Pyro papercraft hilariously ironic, given how flammable we suspect him to be. (Disclaimer: Joystiq advises against the use of flames. There is no respawn in real life.) Check out the highlights for today:
